PILATES

The Pilates Method was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.  Focusing on the core postural muscles, Pilates is designed to integrate mind and body. Joseph Pilates based his method on the key principles of: breath, alignment, flexibility, control, precision, and flow. From this foundation, Pilates has evolved into a modern system of exercises, taught on mats and specialized equipment, which activate the whole body to create strong, efficient patterns of motion.

One concept that makes Pilates unique among many other fitness methods is the idea of strengthening the body from the inside out. Using breath, coordinated with conscious movement, Pilates seeks to activate the core muscles that support the skeletal system and are optimal for stability. As the body gains voluntary control of these deep, often dormant muscles, it allows the larger, outer muscles to move and work with more freedom. The Pilates method incorporates proper joint alignment, muscle-strengthening, and flexibility with a goal of relieving chronic pain and creating a more youthful, natural movement in the body.

Students will benefit from our style of Pilates, because in addition to the typical exercise format, we understand limitations that can create pain and injury and have years of experience creating modifications and movements to allow all different bodies to safely connect to a challenging workout.
